Zero waste with Napier grass project.
During the process of producing seedlac from raw sticklac, all dust particles, wood stick and the red color residue need to be removed by sieving and washing process. Through those days, our company did used those dust particles and wood stick to make fertilizer for plant. But the problem with huge volume of waste water in red was much difficult to solve, since the existing waste water treatment with “ stabilization pond method” was able to improve those organic and solid matter, but still can not remove the red color from the water. Study on the quality of this waste water from the final pond had showed no more contamination of any heavy metals or toxicity. Instead, the higher concentration of nitrogen substance was found and it can be used as additional nutrient for most plants.
In order to continue solving this problem, we had consulted with The Animal Nutrition Regional Center in Lampang, and got to know about “napier grass” which was becoming more popular among livestock farmers. After visited to one of the trapioca flour factory in Nakornratchasima in the northeast and learned how the nearby farmers grow napier grass by using waste water from this factory. This was not only to give extra income for the farmers, but also to build up good CSR scheme for both as well. In fact, napier grass is not only providing very good yield per area of one rai for growers at about 80-10 metric ton per year, it is also a better choice for livestock feeding with amount of protein up to 11-13%.
With this observation, we had started to grow napier grass in our own land of 10 rai since 2015, by using the waste water from our factory process. It works well and the napier grass is now being consumed by one livestock farm with more than 100 animals. Therefore, our intention to push forward the “Zero waste project” has finally fulfilled when all dust particles and wood stick from the process turned to be fertilizer and the waste water becomes the nutrient for growing of the napier grass.
